Ten man Crusaders asked Morden to bat first and reduced the hosts to 15-3 after 5.5 overs. Fortuntaely Ben and Ian then produced a stand of 45 to steady the ship. Ben was dropped on 9 and again on 28 but hit 7 fours in his innings of 37. A score which took him past 150 for the season and leaves him requiring just 35 more to complete 1000 runs for the Parish. Meanwhile, Ian’s 12 included 2 fours, one of which was awarded as a direct hit on the tree inside the boundary. A feat which gave him great satisfaction apparently! This innings was not only his best of the season, but was only 3 short of his personal best. When Ben eventually departed, 3 wickets fell in 3 overs. One of these was David Perry, making his 24th appearance for the Parish, but only his first since 1982. He was welcomed back to the fold with a harsh lbw decision going against him. Next, Gaz and James put on 12 for the 7th wicket, which is a record for this season. The tail then wagged just enough for the total to creep into 3 figures.
101 was not to be a winning score though, as when the visitors batted, 34 runs were on the board before Gaz made the first breakthrough in the 8th over. At the other end, Ben was beating the bat on a regular basis, but as usual enjoyed no luck and had an excellent shout for lbw turned down. It wasn’t until the 18th over, with the score on 65 that the 2nd wicket fell. Steve Alexander taking a great catch at deep square leg – his 5th of the season. Ben got a wicket in the next over – his 10th of the season – and Alan took a wicket in the over after that as Morden started to fight back. Hopes were raised even further 2 overs later, when Alan took 2 wickets in 2 balls, making the score 72-6. However, Adam Crump, the visitors No. 3 proceeded to hit 7 fours in the next five and a half overs to secure a 4 wicket win for his side.
Alan Gilley took his wicket haul for this season upto 12 during this match and he now requires just 8 more to notch up 50 for Morden Parish.
