Morden parish won their first game of the season thanks to good bowling from all the bowlers, especially Ben, plus good fielding and catching, including no dropped catches at all, and determined batting later on from Ahmed and Steve. Morden made three changes to their side, bringing back Ian Tyne and Nadeem Anwer, plus a debut for Naseer Chaudri, for this re-match with Staines who had triumphed by 18 runs in the first fixture two weeks before.
The visitors again found themselves batting first, and lost an early wicket when Phil Clarke clean bowled the opener in the 4th over, whilst Ben Sargent-Cain clean bowled the other opener in the 7th over. This was the start of a superb spell of bowling from Ben, in which he took 5-16 and passed 200 wickets for the club. Only four players have ever taken more than this. Staines were thus reduced to 34-6 after 19 overs and Morden introduced Peter Smith and Nadeem Anwer into he attack to polish off the tail. Before long James Davidson took a good catch off Peter, and Ahmed took a fine catch off Nadeem, who took two wickets for just nine runs to leave Staines on 53-9. The last two batsmen dug in and put together a useful stand of 20, so Phil Clarke was brought back for a second spell, and off his very first delivery the batsmen tried a risky single, and although a quick throw at the stumps from Nadeem missed, Steve Alexander was backing up well, and still had time to throw at the stumps again with great accuracy and the visitors went into tea 73 all out.
The Morden innings started poorly with both Phil Bodman and James Davidson playing the ball on to their own stumps, to leave the score 9-2 after 2.1 overs. Phil Clarke was next in and hit a nice four, but was then caught soon after for just 5, whilst the debutant Naseer held on for 17 minutes before being bowled for only 1. Ben came in after this, and hit a superb boundary, only to be given out shortly after lbw by Ian Tyne, leaving the Parish 45-5 off 12.5overs. Throughout the fall of all these wickets, Ahmed plodded on defiantly and eventually found a good partner in Steve Alexander, This pair stayed together until the very end and won the match for Morden with an unbeaten stand of 30 for the 6th wicket. 33 extras also helped!
