A good bowling and fielding performance from Morden was not enough to save this match after a disappointing batting display produced a total of just 86, the lowest of the season. In this first ever meeting between the sides, Morden collapsed to 31-5 after 11.3 overs but then Russell Atkins and Kevin Gilley, in his 49th appearance for the parish, steadied the innings with a partnership of 14 during the next 13 overs, and these two held up the rampant Thorpe bowlers for 45 minutes until Russ holed out at mid off. This was the start of another collapse as 4 wickets fell for just 16 runs during 6.5 overs but then 12 year old Shakir produced a run a ball 28 including 3 fours and a six as the final pair added 25 in 4.2 overs. Shakir and earlier Steve both made their best score for the parish, whilst Alan's score means that he now requires just 13 more to complete 500 runs for Morden.
When Thorpe batted, John Goddard made an early breakthrough in the third over, but after 11 overs, the score had progressed onto 46-1 so Alan Gilley was brought into the attack. He struck immediately, with two wickets in his first over, including a rare lbw. He was on a hat-trick, but the potential third victim luckily sliced the ball over the head of slip. Five overs later, Alan took a magnificent catch, running backwards at cover. In his next over, Alan claimed his second lbw victim and two after that Steve rewarded him with an excellent catch on the boundary. Morden had fought all the way, but one of the visitor’s openers remained unbeaten on 56 to steer his side to a narrow victory.
Before the match, A Surrey CCC shirt was auctioned for charity and congratulations go to Paul Hancock who made the £20 winning bid.
