Another poor batting display by Morden Parish led to defeat in their first ever meeting with Effingham. Morden welcomed back Karl Bromley, Charles Louis and Steve Everett. Their was also a guest appearance by Effingham's Matt Dixon. Even so, Morden only had ten men available to bat as Neil Brooker arrived after the innings finished having played football. In fact, Morden were lucky to have 10 men batting as Ben had turned up unexpectedly and scored some valuable runs going in at no.9.
Morden were put into bat and lost 6 wickets in the first 9.4 overs. After this, Alan and Matt formed a good partnership, taking the score from 21-6 to 54-7 when Alan was finally out for 26 off just 19 balls. That score took him past 100 runs for the season. It was a relief to see him pass double figures for only the second time in 11 knocks this season. Ben came in next adn added a valuable 20 with Matt, who was then caught for 4, with Steve Everett subsequently out first ball. Ben finished 21 not out off just 22 balls with 4 fours. This score took Ben over 250 runs for the season and only 4 Parish players have ever exceeded his current total. So Morden made 79 all out off only 20 overs, and 54 minutes of possible batting time were not used, and tea was taken early.
Neil Brooker arrived in time to keep wicket as the visitors went out to bat. Ben and John opened the bowling for Morden and a wicket fell in the 6th over when John bowled the left handed opener for 9, at 16-1. In the 10th over, John removed the other opener, lbw for 13, making it 36-2. John's spell spell of 8 overs in the match meant he has bowled over 100 overs this season, which is a splendid effort and deserves more than the 12 wicket haul he finished with, as this is sadly his last appearance of the season. Three overs later, Ben successfully appealed for lbw, so Effingham were 49-3 in the 13th over. Unfortunately, five boundaries in the next 4 overs took the visitors near to victory before Ben got another wicket, making it 72-4 in the 17th over. Alan Gilley came on to bowl with instuctions to get a double hat-trick, but instead, the winning boundary was struck off his third delivery and the match was over before 5pm. This came as a bit of a shock to Don Coombes, who arrived at the ground about 20 minutes later expecting to see his beloved Parish in action for another hour or two, but had to settle for the sight of the scoreboard being loaded into Alan's car.
Stat of the day: This was the first time in 26 matches that no Parish player took a catch during the game.
