The first ever meeting between these two sides ended with Morden’s fifth win of the season, and the second in successive matches. The Parish had to make five changes to the previous week’s victorious side, including a debut for Anjum Mahmood.

Morden chose to insert the visitors on a pitch with variable bounce. The bowlers exploited this well with John Goddard taking a wicket in his second over bowling the opener with one that kept low. In the ninth over, Ben removed the other opener lbw and three overs later John removed the dangerous looking number 3 with a slower ball that was edged to slip and caught by debutant Anjum. Ben took his second wicket in the next over, leaving Capel 22-4 off 13 overs. The visitor’s skipper came in and held things up for a while, until Anjum was introduced into the attack and bowled him with just his 4th delivery. Another stubborn partnership developed in the next 7 overs, but then a rapid delivery from Anjum hit the no. 4 batsman in the head and he had to retire hurt. Two overs after this, Umar Hassan took his first wicket for the Parish bowling a classy looking no. 8 batsman. The previously injured batsman then resumed his innings. In the next over Alan Gilley struck finding some turn to bowl the other batsman to expose the tail which consisted of three youngsters. The experienced batsman was given an easy single and Alan wrapped up the innings with 3 wickets in 4 balls. This took him past 50 wickets for the Parish and he was aided by Paul Hancock taking a catch at mid on, Umar taking a catch at silly point and Phil taking his second stumping of the season.

Morden made an uncertain start to their reply, with Ian Tyne dropped in the first over and then dismissed caught at point in the second over. John Goddard came in next and offered an early catch to mid on but two potential catchers left it to each other and John survived. He punished them severely after this, hitting 7 fours mainly square on the off side and passing 100 runs for the season on his way to a fine 32 from just 37 deliveries. He and Ben put on 43 in 6 overs before Ben was dismissed and then 24 in 4 overs with Anjum, before the keeper got John with a leg side catch. Soon after, Steve hit the winning boundary.
