Morden made 5 changes to the team which lost heavily the previous week and produced an excellent all round performance in very hot conditions. Inspired by the freshly painted boundary, Morden hit 24 fours and a six in their 152-8 after being inserted. There was an early collapse, but Allan and Phil Clarke joined forces at 24-4, and went on to add 101 for the 5th wicket which was a new club record beating the precious effort of 89 set in 1981. This was the clubs 2nd century stand of the season, and only the 16th ever. Phil scored a new personal best of 79 from 89 balls with 15 fours and a six in just over an hour and a half. His 2nd fifty of the season came of 43 balls in 39 minutes including 11 fours.
When St. Lukes batted, Ben Sargent-Cain and John Goddard made crucial early breakthroughs to leave the visitors 20-6 in the 9th over. This included a good catch behind by Allan Clarke and a tricky catch taken by Ian Tyne at backward square leg. The lower order batsmen held on for a while, but Ben completed a 5 wicket haul and Phil Clarke chipped in by bowling the skipper and taking a catch in the covers. Peter Smith bagged a couple of wickets near the end, including an lbw, which evened out this seasons lbw statistics with 9 having been given by the Parish and 9 received.
Ben’s wicket total is now up to 176, moving him one place higher in the clubs all time list to 6th place. He is now 24 behind the 5th placed bowler who is John Perry.
