Morden Parish notched up their first home win of the season, and made it five wins and a draw in their last six meetings with Prims. Morden had to make four changes to the previous week’s eleven, including the re-introduction of Kadeem Latif, who became the 25th player used by the Parish in the twelve matches played so far.
Prims decided to bat first in hot, sunny conditions but the breeze and the slope helped opening bowler Ed Corrigan who, having taken the first wicket in his third over, went on to claim three wickets in just twelve balls, leaving Prims on 14-3 after 9 overs. The new ball was lost in the 11th over, disappearing into someone’s garden after a boundary had been struck. The replacement ball had a contrasting effect on the opening bowlers. Ed, having taken 3 wickets to that point, got no more wickets while Gaz Burch, so far wicketless, went on to take 3 wickets in just 7 balls. One of these was thanks to a fine catch at extra cover by Alan Gilley, which was his 5th catch of the season. John Goddard was then introduced into the attack and took a wicket with his very first ball, making the visitors 37-7 of 15.1 overs. A partnership of 14 held up Morden briefly, but John then took 2 wickets in 4 balls, and this was followed by Peter Smith taking a wicket with only his 2nd ball, to end the innings at 65 all out, and produce best bowling figures of the season for Ed, John and Peter.
Morden tried and innovative batting order after the break, with Phil Bodman and James Davidson opening the batting together for the first time ever, and only the fourth time that James had opened in 88 matches. Unfortunately, he was caught at point in the fourth over for a duck, but by the time Phil was out for a seasons best 23 in the 9th over, the score had progressed to 31-2, which was almost halfway to the target. 12 year old Shaqir had been promoted to number 3 in the order and rose to the occasion with a defiant knock of 19 before he was run out with the score on 62-5. There was just time for Ian Tyne to commemorate his 50th appearance for the Parish with the 14th duck he has had for the club, and then for Alan Gilley to come in and hit the winning winning boundary off the first ball he faced, which took him past 600 runs for the Parish, and secured a well-deserved 4 wicket victory.
