Morden made six changes to the team that faced Cuddington seven days earlier, but still slipped to a 3rd successive defeat. This was the first ever meeting between the clubs, with the CCC pairing Morden with the 4th XI of a club which competes in the Castle Lager Surrey Championship.

After inserting the visitors, Morden made a breakthrough in the 11th over when Peter Smith took an excellent one handed catch at slip. It was his 85th catch for the club and gave Ben his only wicket of the day. In the 16th over John Goddard clean bowled the other opener making the score 53-2. A 60 run partnership then followed until Alan Gilley took a difficult catch on the boundary off Peter’s bowling in the 28th over. That was Alan’s 4th catch of the season and Peter’s 550th wicket for the club. At the other end, Ben continued to bowl well despite a possible broken finger picked up while attempting a spectacular catch off his own to bowling to a fiercely struck drive. Phil then took a great stumping off Alan’s bowling to break a 43 run 4th wicket partnership in the 36th over. In the next over, Shakir and Ben combined to run out the no. 5 batsman. Finally, Alan took 2 more wickets in the last over which takes him to 16 for the season and 46 in total for the club. Steve Alexander took his 6th catch of the season for the first wicket and Alan clean bowled another with the last ball of the innings.

Morden’s innings got off to the worst possible start when Steve was bowled off the first ball. He was the first of 8 Morden batsmen to make 0 in an innings of 83 which was the lowest total of the season. The second wicket fell in the 6th over when John Goddard was bowled for 8 trying to despatch yet another half pitcher which decided not to bounce on that occasion. The Gilley brothers then combined to make a game of it and put on 57 for the 3rd wicket. Kevin was celebrating his 50th appearance and appropriately faced 50 deliveries in 58 minutes for his 4. Ian Tyne was caught and bowled the very next ball, but young Neil Brooker hung around long enough to add 17 for the 5th wicket before Alan was finally out for 64. Many observers felt that the beamer he skied to the keeper should have been called a no-ball. Regardless of that, it was an excellent 64 coming from only 41 balls in 55 minutes including 13 fours and a six (50 from 33 balls). It was his second 50 of the season and an innings of stark contrast to that of his brother. His departure heralded the loss of 6 wickets in 15 balls for no further runs and that as they say was that.
