Match Report by Ian Tyne

Well after last week game of scoring a hundred and batting first spirits were high. So turning up on a very warm day we need to win the toss and bat first. With only one change from last week with Jim not around Phil Clarke was back.

So looking at the team on paper it was very strong again. Again Ben walked out to the middle to hopefully win a toss and guest what people he won. Gladly he put us into bat and aloud Corinthians to field in the sun. Ben was happy after winning the toss kept virtually the same batting line up as last week. Charles and Neil would open and Stephen would be number 3. Some good opening shots by the ever growing opener in Neil and Charles was playing some graceful shots lead to an open standing of 24 before Charles was bowled. This brought Stephen to the crease. Neil and Stephen again started to form a partnership for the second wicket. A couple of fours by both players and a understanding of running between wickets was un done when Neil after batting again for over an hour went fishing and edge to first slip. Now Phil Clarke has always had a good eye for batting and today was not going to shame us in the shot selection. As it was a warm day running between wickets was always going to be a slog on the old stamina. So Phil opened up with 4’s and then a 6 which meant a lost ball and we had to change the ball but that would not be the end of balls going missing!

Stephen then was bowled and Ben came to the crease with him and Phil putting on quick runs many of them over the boundary for four. Slowly Phil was creeping up though the 30’s the 40’s and after Ben had been bowled for 20 Phil hit a 4 to take him pass 50 his first of the season finishing off with 53 not out. That was not all the fun and games of the batting. In the last over Big Gun Alan was on form. He hit one four and the bowler pulled a muscle and so a new bowler was brought into the fray. First ball up a single was taken and then two balls bowled above the batsmen head was called for a No Ball but Alan swatted them both for four and this left him 13 not out.

So batting first for the second week running we made over 100 in fact 160 was scored the highest batting of the season and the third hundred on the trot for the Parish. Tea was taken and a good feeling was in the camp that this could be our second win of the season.

With the team taking the field Ben set aggressive fields and this lead to early wickets falling, 2 for Ben and 1 for Ed who was again bowling very well. Then Charles came to the Party and bowled very well picking up 1 wicket and finishing his short spelling with bowling figure of 4-1-5-1. A run out then followed with Ed in the out field a batsmen hit the ball hard Ed turned to run after the ball but it seemed would go for 4 but it slowed right down and so Ed caught up with the ball and threw it in and the bails where taken off by Neil behind the stumps and a Run Out was called. Who says slow running is not the key to this game.

Phil then came back to the bowling attack and picked up 3 wickets and slowly the Parish where pulling the rope tight around the neck of Corinthians in trying to win the game. With wickets falling it came down to a bowler with one arm good and one arm bad. Sounds like an admiral that once ruled the waves. Then came a point in the game that could have ended up messier than it did. Ben had brought back himself and Ed to the bowling attack to try and get the last wicket. Ed coming up the hill had found coming back a little hard but with the field close in Ed bowled a fall toss the batsmen drove the ball with a lovely crack. Expecting to see the ball whiz off for four the next thing we saw was another crack but this time as the ball flashed off the bat though the mid wicket area Matt Coote was close in and as he turned away the ball hit him in the head and down he went.

Everyone rushed over to him to find him dazed but lucky not much more damage that we could see. Matt did go to Hospital and got him self checked out. So as the last 20 overs came to a close a little disappointment was felt in the Parish camp but also a sigh of relief that Matt was OK. So with Morden Corinthians scoring 109 for 9 and the Parish had to settle for a draw.
