Match Report by Ian Tyne
Well on a cloudy day Morden where in a good mood and a team made up of a few people making there season debut. It was a pleasure to see Peter Smith, Ed Corrigan and James Davidson coming in to make the Eleven. Ben’s continuing success in losing the toss meant that we batted first. With Charles still keeping the No 1 spot Ben came up with a plan. Let’s try someone new to open this year bring in the lamb to the forum Neil Brooker. Some say bold, some say wild and some say "Thank you Ben for not asking me!"
So the game started with the usual fast scoring of Charles but with the score on 7 Charles was done by a ball which did not bounce! 7 for 1 and bringing another youngest in the team Stephen Alexander. A good shot selection by both players who are growing in confidence as the season grows. On the shot of the day this must go down to young Neil a ball just wide of off stump a perfect shot laying back into the shot one knee on the floor and cutting back behind square leg for four. Soon though a couple of wickets fell first to go was Stephen who was bowled. This brought Ben the captain to the crease. Who told one umpire that he was not up for it! More of that a little later in the report. Then after batting for 1hr and 2mins Neil fell to the ball not bouncing again but scoring 22 this young lad could one day grow in to a fine cricketer. So enters BIG BANG Gilley so far the gun had not gone off and today was no difference first ball swing and a miss and bowled our well we know Alan will not worry about this but at 40 for 4 things did look a little worrying. So enter one of the seasons debut’s James.
With James coming to the crease the tempo of the game increased. Runs started to flow from his bat and Ben also was chipping in with the bat as well. Quick running between the wickets and boundary’s flowing the 100 was reached but time was running out so quick singles also meant that wickets started to fall. First to go was Ben who made a respectable 36 this was followed shortly by James and then that meant it brought Matt Coote and Ian Tyne to the crease. So the runs would dry up one thing Ian does not know is the quick single but on this day it was Ian’s ability to not move ended up running Matt out!!! Ian then followed shortly with again a big swing but offering not much more! This brought Ed and Peter Smith to crease with Peter running a quick single and scoring two. So with a score of 126 on the board a happy Parish had tea. Energy Exiles had used nine bowlers in there time on the field.
Tea finished the fielding had to be done. Opening the bowling was Ben and Ed. With Ed finding line and length but also getting swing on occasions Energy Exiles found batting not as easy as they may have thought. With Energy Exiles taking it steady Ed produced 2 wickets in 2 balls and the spirit was lifted amongst the Parish, especially after a glorious catch by Alan. Then Ben Chipped in with a wicket. So the Parish had 3 early wickets but that was where Energy Exiles picked up the pace and a good partnership saw them getting ever closer to the total but our bowlers still carried on with their jobs. Enter Peter Smith and Matt Coote. The No 1 batsman of Energy Exiles had been going along at a steady rate and so Peter using all his years bowled one down the bounced up the batsman played his shot but it sailed in the air Matt dived and in his hand stuck the ball!! Then their top scorer fell on 60 to a full and high toss by Ben and Charles doing his juggling act held on to the ball. Then wickets by Peter, Ed and Ben again made the game interesting till the end but with 3.2 overs Energy Exiles hit the winning run. So the Parish lost but a lot of good things came out of it. First the emergence of a new Opener in young Neil. Stephen looking happy at 3. Peter Smith still got the bowling magic which has served him many years playing for the Parish. Also James bringing his bat with him and scoring 21. So all in all an enjoyable game
